What is primary care and why is it important?
At Spira Care, primary care means more than just treating symptoms—it’s about building a trusted relationship with a provider who understands your health history, lifestyle, and goals.
Ready for a better healthcare experience?
Call 913-29-SPIRA (77472) to make an appointment. Online scheduling is available for established patients at MySpiraCare.com.
Primary care is your first stop for general healthcare needs, including preventive services and treatment for common illnesses and minor injuries. It’s not the same as emergency or specialty care—and those types of care aren’t substitutes for primary care. Preventive care includes annual checkups, routine screenings, vaccinations, and other services designed to help keep you healthy and catch potential issues early. By regularly seeing your primary care provider (PCP), you can reduce your risk for many serious or long-term conditions. Your PCP gets to know your health history, lifestyle, and risks, and supports you and your family through every stage of life.
Your primary care provider (PCP)—whether a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant—is your go-to partner for everyday health needs. They’re your first point of contact for questions, concerns, and care coordination with specialists when needed. Seeing your PCP regularly for annual checkups helps you stay on top of your health, whether you’re managing chronic conditions or simply aiming to feel your best. They can help identify issues early, manage conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, refer you to in-network specialists when necessary, and guide you in making informed decisions about your care.
Seeing the same primary care provider (PCP) regularly builds trust and continuity, which can lead to better health outcomes and lower healthcare costs. Your PCP gets to know you and your family, helping you stay on top of your health through every stage of life.
Finding a PCP who aligns with your preferences can make a big difference in your healthcare experience, your long-term wellbeing, and can help minimize your healthcare costs for years to come.6 Get to know the Spira Care Teams here.

Chronic Condition Management: Personalized support for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and more.
Lab Draws and X-Rays: Onsite services at most locations to reduce the need for outside referrals.3
Medication Management: Our Ambulatory Care Pharmacist works with your Care Team to ensure your medications are safe, effective, and affordable. Post-Hospital Support: Smooth transitions back to primary care after a hospital stay.
Diabetes Care Support: Certified specialists partner with you and your PCP to help ensure you have all the tools you need to manage your diabetes diagnosis, whether you’ve had diabetes for years or were recently diagnosed.
